Frank Cummins, MD, F.A.C.C.

   Background

Dr. Cummins began performing balloon angioplasty in 1982.  Since that time he has been a leader in the introduction of new technology for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.  He is credentialed in the use of percutaneous techniques including balloon angioplasty, stent implantation, excimer laser ablation, brachytherapy, drug-eluting stents and rotational atherectomy.

Dr. Cummins has been participating in clinical research for several decades and has been instrumental in the introduction of numerous innovative angioplasty devices and drugs at area hospitals.  He made a major research contribution as an investigator in the development of the platelet inhibition drug ReoPro (abciximab) in the EPIC trials, principal investigator in the development of coronary laser angioplasty, and has been a national proctor for physician training in excimer laser angioplasty techniques.  Dr. Cummins was the national principal investigator and protocol author for the Boston Scientific POST-IT Trial evaluating stent implantation with high pressure post-dilation facilitated by Intravascular Ultrasound imaging.

Dr. Cummins is currently the principal investigator and protocol author for the General Electric Medical Division -Computerized Tomography COMETS trial evaluating the use of CT angiography as an alternative to cardiac catheterization and fluoroscopic imaging.
